Guerra
Materials
Heavyweight Paper and Embroidery Thread
4.5 x 4.5" Book
Guerra is an artist book that explores identity as both a personal experience and a constructed label. Developed through critical reflection and research-driven discussion, the project examines the pressure to perform authenticity within an individualistic society and the disconnect that can arise between self-perception and cultural expectation. The book specifically addresses feelings of guilt and shame surrounding the artist's Ecuadorian heritage in not feeling "Hispanic enough," particularly in relation to language and familial connection. Through diaristic text, intentionally obscured legibility, and a collection of images from Ecuador, Guerra uses the book format as a space for vulnerability, self-examination, and the ongoing process of reconnecting with heritage beyond imposed definitions. The physical construction of the book reinforces these themes, featuring a hand-woven bracelet bearing the artist's last name used as the headband, grounding the work in personal lineage and authorship.
